Mental Retardation & Developmental Disabilities
Stress can play a major role in the lives of people and make normal day-to-day stressors overbearing and even and even cause or exacerbate numerous mental impairments such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks and phobias.

According to the National Institute of Health, over 20 percent of Americans ages 18 and older (about one five adults) suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. This translates to more than 44 million Americans per year. Four of the ten leading causes of disability in the United States are mental disorder – major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Stress causes and exacerbates mental illness. Early Signs of Disabling Stress Problems. People who suffer from mental illnesses may display one or more of the following symptoms (among others): suicidal ideation, threats to others, feelings of intense tension or anxiety, sudden changes in eating and/or sleeping habits, atypical thoughts and speech, sudden changes in mood and behavior, withdrawal from friends and family, loss of interest in favorite activities as well as various physical symptoms.
